PLAIN CATHOLICS

On Being Separate

In accordance with the principle of subsidiarity, neither the state nor any larger society should substitute itself for the initiative and responsibility of individuals and intermediary bodies.

Society ought to promote the exercise of virtue, not obstruct it. It should be animated by a just hierarchy of values.

Where sin has perverted the social climate, it is necessary to call for the conversion of hearts and appeal to the grace of God. Charity urges just reforms. There is no solution to the social question apart from the Gospel (cf. CA 3, 5).
Catechism of the Catholic Church 1894-1896

"Nothing can be more dangerous than evil companions. They communicate the infection of their vices to all who associate with them." St. John Baptist de la Salle

"On Being Separate"

From The Church and the Land by Fr. Vincent McNabb, OP

SEEK FIRST the Kingdom of God, and His justice. First things first, for God's sake; or you will crash at once. Let your Exodus be after the coming out of Egypt. Leave the garden cities and the flesh pots, not in order to scorn suburbia or to lead a simple life, but to worship God.

Quit most of your fellowmen not because you hate them or despise them, but because you love them so much as to hate the conditions which degrade and enslave them. Do not leave Babylon as hating the Babylonians, but as hating Babylon, which kills the Babylonians. And do not seek ease or security you can obtain by using Babylon. What will it avail you to cease living in Babylon if you do not cease living on Babylon?

...indeed, be a world apart, a self-sufficient, self-supporting kingdom; and though you surround yourselves with a high wall of brick and a higher wall of silence, your sermon will be the heart and hope of all the sermons we apostles will preach in the daily exercises of our craft of apostle. Fr. Vincent McNabb

END TIMES AND FEAR? Plain Catholics do not worry about whether it is the end of the world or about Christ's return. We do grow and can our food; hunt and fish; but it is always for the coming winter and for the present nutritional necessaries. Ours is a life of seeking the simplest solution without expensive means. We dedicate our energies in discerning and following God's Will in the NOW, the PRESENT and entrust ourselves to God for the future. We full well understand that eschatology is an exercise in hypotheses for in Matthew 24:36 we read

36 But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

So it is Plain Catholics seek to separate ourselves not just from societal immorality but also from societal fear, trusting that God will protect and guide us as promised in Luke 12:

4 I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more.

5 I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.

6 Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.

7 Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.

8 I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God.

9 But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.

and Psalm 91

9 You have the LORD for your refuge; you have made the Most High your stronghold.

10 No evil shall befall you, no affliction come near your tent.

11 For God commands the angels to guard you in all your ways.

Let us walk with Our Lord in a spirit of hope, not fear.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES: SEPARATION FROM THE WORLD

Proverbs 3:5-6  Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 23:20-21 Do not remain in the company of drunkards nor with those who gorge themselves at meals. For they soon come to ruin and are clothed in rags.

Proverbs 13:20 Walk with wise men and you will become wise, but the companion of fools will fare badly.

Matthew 5:3-16  Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

Luke 6:27-37 "But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you....
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit (is) that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount.
But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as (also) your Father is merciful.
"Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.

Luke 16:13  No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love
the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot
serve God and mammon.

Luke 16:15 And he said to them, "You justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God.

John 17:14  ...the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

John 17:16  They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Romans 12: 1-2, 12-21  I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. 12-21 Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the holy ones, exercise hospitality. Bless those who persecute (you), bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Have the same regard for one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly; do not be wise in your own estimation. Do not repay anyone evil for evil; be concerned for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, on your part, live at peace with all. Beloved, do not look for revenge but leave room for the wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." Rather, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head. Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what concord has Christ with Beli-al? Or what part has he that believes with an infidel? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God; as God has said, "I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and you be separate," says the Lord, "and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and you shall be my sons and daughters," says the Lord Almighty.

Galatians 1:10 Am I now currying favor with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ.

Colossians 3: 23-24 Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be slaves of the Lord Christ.

1 Thess 4:10b-12 Nevertheless we urge you, brothers, to progress even more, and to aspire to live a tranquil life, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your (own) hands, as we instructed you, that you may conduct yourselves properly toward outsiders and not depend on anyone.

James 1:27  Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this: To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

James 4:4  You adulterers and adulteresses, do you not know that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

1 Peter 2:9 ...you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people (a people for God's possession); that you should show forth the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

1 John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any [one loves] the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God abides forever.

Revelation 3:10 Because you have kept my message of endurance, I will keep you safe in the time of trial that is going to come to the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.

Revelation 3:13, 15-19 '"Whoever has ears ought to hear what the Spirit says to the churches."'..."I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, 'I am rich and affluent and have no need of anything,' and yet do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich, and white garments to put on so that your shameful nakedness may not be exposed, and buy ointment to smear on your eyes so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.

Revelation 18:4...I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that you be not partakers of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues.
